An Experiment on Effect of Musk Melon Seed Recipes on Malnourished Preschoolers

Abstract

One in three preschoolers in developing countries is undernourished. Consequently, they are likely to have impaired immune systems, poor cognitive development and susceptibility to diet-related chronic diseases. Muskmelon seeds may helpful as a home remedy in combating the malnutrition because it has a significantly high nutritional value; resulting in a number of health benefits to its consumers. It contains Vitamin A, B, C and minerals like magnesium, sodium and potassium. As it is rich in potassium & vitamin C, it can help in control blood pressure, prevent the risk of strokes, reduce the problem of developing kidney stones and work as anti oxidant. Musk melon seeds are also rich in protein and fat which are useful in combating malnutrition.

The objectives of present experiment were to measure the effect of musk melon seed on malnutrition & to assess the nutritional status of preschoolers of low income group by anthropometric method. 100 subjects, through randomization, were taken as sample in Ghaziabad city. The data was collected through questionnaire (includes general, nutritional & non-nutritional profile with 3 days dietary recalls). To assess the effect of seeds experimental group (50 subjects) were treated with musk melon seed (20 gm/day) for 45 days in the form of mixture and with milk while control group (50 subjects) not imparted with musk melon seed. Mean, Standard deviation, t-test were used as statistical techniques to draw results which have been reported positive regarding musk melon seed recipes on nutritional status of preschoolers.

Introduction

One in three preschoolers in developing countries is undernourished. Consequently, they are likely to have impaired immune systems, poor cognitive development, low productivity as adults and susceptibility to diet-related chronic diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease later in life. Therefore, muskmelon seeds are helpful as a home remedy in combating the malnutrition.

Muskmelons botanically known as Cucumis melo, otherwise known as cantaloupes, are a fruit in the melon family. Its flesh is sweet to the taste and surrounded by a tough rind with a webbed or netting design. It is one of the excellent summer cooling fruit, very refreshing and filling. The fruit has a significantly high nutritional value; resulting in a number of health benefits to its consumers. The seeds contain Vitamin A, B, C and minerals like magnesium, sodium and potassium. Muskmelon seeds are good source of vitamin C, which is an anti-oxidant. This helps to prevent heart diseases and even cancer. As it is rich in potassium, it can help control blood pressure and can prevent the risk of strokes. Potassium in the fruit can also reduce the problem of developing kidney stones. Musk melon seeds are also rich in protein and fat which are useful in combating malnutrition.

  • Melon seeds are rich in protein (36%) and fat (45%).

Hypotheses

There is no significant effect of musk melon seed recipes on anthropometric parameters of malnourished preschoolers in low income group.

Methodology

The entire study was conducted in Ghaziabad city on 100 subjects of low income group. Sample was selected through randomization. The criteria for inclusion in the study were malnourished preschoolers between the age of 2 to 6 years who were vegetarian and belongs to low income group. To achieve the objectives sample was distributed into two groups- experimental group (50 subjects) & control group (50 subjects). Experimental group was treated with musk melon seed (20 gm/day) for 45 days in the form of mixture and with milk while control group. Anthropometric measurements were taken before and after the treatment to determine the nutritional status and impact of musk melon seeds. Standardized techniques were used in anthropometric measurements. Data was collected through questionnaire (includes general, nutritional & non-nutritional profile with 3 days dietary recalls). Mean, Standard deviation, t-test were used as statistical techniques to draw results which have been reported positive regarding musk melon seed recipes on nutritional status of preschoolers.

It is evident from above data that there is no significance difference in the anthropometric parameters of control group because the calculated value of t is smaller than the table value of t at both the levels of significance. But in the Experimental group the calculated value oft for each anthropometric parameter is enough larger than the table value oft to reject null hypotheses at both levels of significance. Hence it may be concluded that there is a significant difference in height, weight, MUAC & chest circumference of subjects in experimental group after the treatment while control group have not the same.

Conclusion

Finally it may be concluded that there is a significant impact of musk melon seed on malnourished pre-schoolers in low income group. So, musk melon seeds can therefore be considered as an important source of plant proteins, lipids and calcium which could be used in the fight against malnutrition.
